Pridelines Youth Services’ board of directors and staff are excited to join the Smart Ride 10 as the seventh beneficiary agency and the official Miami-Dade County agency. Pridelines is South Florida’s oldest LGBTQ service agency and one of the first designated HIV testing sites in South Florida. To date we are still dedicated to the health of our community and the youth we serve.
Pridelines hosts a peer-led, adult facilitated, sexual education and HIV/STI prevention education program on a weekly basis called Sex Talks. Though this program remains unfunded, our board and staff feel that it is essential to the health and well being of our youth. Therefore, Pridelines currently funds Sex Talks with unrestricted donations made by our very generous donors.
Additionally, Pridelines partners with agencies such as Care Resource and the Aids Healthcare Foundation (AHF) to ensure that our young people have access to HIV/STI testing on an ongoing basis. In fact, Pridelines has partnered with Care Resource on a project that is funded by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) to identify young men of color that have engaged in high-risk sexual behavior. This project is intended to serve the target population by providing immediate testing and a Personalized Cognitive Counseling (PCC) intervention. Through this partnership our drop-in center is currently registered as a Care Resource HIV testing site.
Finally, Pridelines board and staff remains committed to the health of our youth and community by remaining engaged in HIV work on personal and professional levels. Pridelines board has openly HIV positive members, our staff has openly positive HIV members that are also engaged on HIV and Health Department committees geared toward HIV issues, and our Executive Director is one of 35 others on a National level to launch the “We The LGBT” initiative that is geared toward ending the epidemic.
“We are exstatic about this opportunity” says Victor Diaz-Herman, Executive Director at Pridelines Youth Services. “As South Florida’s oldest LGBTQ service agency and one of the first testing [HIV] sites, we always have the well being of our community at hand. It only seems fitting that Pridelines be a participating agency on the Smart Ride. I’m sure it’s no secret, our young people are becoming sexually active at a younger age, especially those that are questioning their sexuality. The SR10 funding is going to help us sustain our HIV/STI programming, which is almost 90% unfunded at the moment.”
Pridelines Youth Services intends on using Smart Ride funding for the following:
- to support a designated HIV/STI testing room and HIV/STI individual and group counseling rooms at their new center (expansion scheduled for 2014).
- to fund their Sex Talks program that focuses on sexual education and prevention education.
- to establish an HIV support group.
Additionally, Pridelines intends on using these funds to serve the community at large by making services available to individuals over the age of 24 on designated evening when their center is not typically open to their youth.
